Post Production Diary

After I finished writing my script, I started to record my narration. I did this by recording voice memos using the mic on my laptop while I had the script infant of my on my laptop's screen. I typed my script straight into Celtx. If I needed to rerecord a certain segment of my narration I could do that by pausing the recording, moving the pointer to where I wanted to start the rerecording and press the replace/record button.

Once I finished recording my narrative I exported the voice over file into my downloads and imported it into my video editing software. Within my video editing software I could alter and cut parts of the audio as well as editing my video recordings.

I use the video editing software Davinci Resolve to edit my images, videos, audio and text together to create my documentary. With this I can add text, credits, music, narration, sound effects and transitions.

A main problem that occurred with my audio recording was related to breath sounds, to fix this I went through the entirety of my documentary and cut out each audio breath sound. Some of which I could leave in as they were less noticeable one I had placed the music over the tracks but some still needed removing.

When moving from the voiceover to clips where I was speaking directly to the camera, I had to alter the volume of the sound internally to make sure that they both sounded relatively the same. I found that the voice over was way louder in comparison, meaning that I had to increase the volume of the clips where I was speaking to the camera. However this also made the background noise a considerable amount louder too. To make it sound more natural I made the sound fade in, so that over that short couple second time period, the background noise faded in and was less noticeable in comparison to it just randomly starting.

Since I faded in the audio, I decided to fade in the start of the video too so that they faded together and made it look more put together and professional.

An issue that I ran into that I didn't realise after completing the first two drafts was a mistake that I had made when recording my narration. Because of this mistake I had to alter some of the sound from when talking about the Beatles visiting the Empire. Originally I had said that the Beatles performed at the Empire on the "9th of February of 1963 and the 30th of February of the same year" when I was supposed to state that they played on the "9th of February of 1963 and the 30th of November of the same year." Instead of rerecording the whole line again, I simply recorded me saying the word November, cut out the word February from my VoiceOver and placed the new recording where the original track was.

I used several different layers for my documentary editing, three were for my videos and images. I used more than one because for some I didn't want to use the original video sound and instead of shutting off all the audio for each individual video, it was easier to just move it into a separate layer and turn of the audio for that specific layer.

I only had two layers for my audio recordings, one of which was for my narrative and the other for my background music.
